Asa Wright Nature Centre

Asa Wright Nature Centre (Trinidad)

"The continental origin and proximity of Trinidad to South America, along with its many varied habitats, has resulted in an unusually diverse fauna. The species lists for this island are impressive: 108 mammals; 400 birds; 55 reptiles; 25 amphibians; and 617 butterflies! No other area in the West Indies, and few if any areas of comparable size anywhere in tropical America, can match this spectacular diversity of species. It is 50 miles long by about 37 miles wide with varied landscape features, including its Northern Range rising to a little over 3,000 feet, most of which is covered by one or another form of tropical rainforest. It is here, in this rich tropical part of this beautiful island, that you will find the magical Asa Wright Nature Centre.
"To see Squirrel Cuckoos, Toucans, and all manner of other species fly within sight of the front gallery, to see Tufted Coquettes and half a dozen other species of hummingbirds feeding on the vervain from the back gallery, is but a start of what the birder will find at the Centre. Botanists and entomologists and other naturalists will find the area equally rich."
Blue Waters Inn

Blue Waters Inn

"From the deep blue of the Atlantic, to the golden sandy beach of Batteaux Bay, to the brilliant green of our lush hills - this is Blue Waters Inn. We offer Tobago's finest hiking and birdwatching. Be awakened by a symphony of birds celebrating the birth of a new day.
"Curious Manta Rays, richly overgrown coral reefs, hordes of friendly fish and highly impressive drift dives - Aquamarine Dive Limited, our on-site dive operation, offers easy access to Tobago's most unique dive adventures, with our finest sites only minutes from your doorstep.
"Our bay is known as Batteaux Bay (Boat Bay) - a private, sheltered horseshoe-shaped bay with a golden sandy beach approximately 1000 feet long. The swimming is safe here year-round. There is fantastic snorkeling and scuba diving right off of our beach.
"A nature lovers paradise, the Blue Waters Inn offers 46 acres of lush tropical grounds. We are directly across from Little Tobago (Bird of Paradise Island), Tobago's largest bird sanctuary, which is approximately a 10-minute boat ride away. St. Giles island, which is the southern Caribbean's largest seabird colony, is approximately 30 minutes by boat, and Tobago's lush Main Ridge forest is approximately 30 minutes by car.
"Our in-house gift shop "Treasure Chest" has a wide variety of clothing, local craft, and souvenir items."
The Blue Waters Inn is a beachfront low-rise resort hotel tucked away in its own secluded bay. It is located approximately 20 miles from Scarborough, Tobago's capital, and 27 miles from Crown Point International Airport. All rooms face the ocean and have a private shower/wc, ceiling fans, and a balcony or porch. The "Fish Pot Restaurant" specializes in seafood. The Fish Pot also serves Caribbean and international cuisine with a local flair. The "Shipwreck Bar" offers a wide variety of exotic Caribbean and international cocktails.
Paria Springs Eco Community

Courtenay Rooks' Paria Springs Eco Community (Trinidad)

"Paria Springs, a nature lodge in Trinidad, the Caribbean's best ecotourism destination, where you experience South America's vast diversity of flora and fauna on a Caribbean Island. The best of both worlds.
"The area provides habitat for a huge range of species which are currently being documented, ranging from fresh water shrimps and crabs to reptiles, birds and mammals. Particularly striking is the number and beauty of butterfly and bird species. The large and beautiful iridescent blue emperor butterfly is frequently seen. Raptors are often seen perched on high branches or circling on thermal currents. The elusive bearded bell bird can be heard daily and sometimes viewed on a perch which is visible from the road. Several species of humming birds, tanagers and honeycreepers are abundant, especially when the local trees are in season. The rare Trinidad piping guan has also been observed in the area. It is not unusual for visitors to the island to add 100 to 200 bird species to their life lists. Mammals include red brocket deer, manicou, bats, squirrels, wild pigs, agouti, armadillos and the very rarely seen ocelot. It is hoped that the native red howler monkeys can soon be reintroduced into the area."
Cuffie River Nature Retreat and Ecolodge

Cuffie River Nature Retreat and Ecolodge (Tobago)

"On the edge of Tobago's rain forest - recorded as the oldest in the Western Hemisphere; surrounded by wild heliconias, bamboo groves and ancient forest trees; gently cradled in the Runnemede Valley lies the Cuffie River Nature Retreat and Eco-lodge - a remote yet modern facility set against a backdrop of mountains and encircled by cool, refreshing mountain streams and pools. Our family-run retreat offers: Ten (10) tastefully appointed guest rooms, a kitchen which yields all sorts of succulent, healthy and garden-fresh Tobago delights, pure spring water for drinking, an abundant feast for bird lovers with hummingbirds and motmots living just outside the front doors, icy cold bathing under energetic waterfalls - all set against a wild abundance of bamboo, cypress, immortelles and pines. Light, cool and airy rooms without need for fans & air conditioners. All the pampering you could desire.
"We provide transportation to and from the Crown Point International Airport (Tobago) and the Scarborough Deep Water Harbor, nature walks accompanied by your personal guide, beach outings, accompanied sightseeing excursions to historic and scenic interests spots, reef cruising in a glass-bottomed boat, snorkeling and fishing, car rentals, and accommodation of special dietary needs. Listen to intermittent tropical showers 'walking' through the rain forest at night while you lie snugly in bed; take a three-hour hike through virgin forests and encounter long-abandoned ruins of sugar mills from the seventeenth century; pause at a bamboo bench or dip in the sweet cool waterfall pools as a midway refresher on your hike; return to the eco-lodge for a hot shower and a comforting pot of tea or tasty tropical rum punch."
Grange Cottage

Grange Cottage (Tobago)

"Ideally situated directly on the golden sands of Grange Beach, The Cottage sits serenely shaded on 2 acres of tropical woodlands amidst coconut palms, samaan and almond trees and other exotic foliage Quiet, unpretentious, understated, Grange Cottage provides the essentials for your unique Caribbean vacation on the most southerly island of Tobago.
"The Cottage is on 2 floors and offers 4 bedrooms, each with twin beds, and two bathrooms with face basin, toilet and shower enclosures. The bedrooms are uncomplicated, provided with ceiling fan, wardrobe and dressing table. There is a rustic charm in this simplicity.
"The focal point of the Cottage is undeniably its spacious open air wooden verandah with wide, comfortable armchairs where you can sit and soak in the bird calls or the sound of the Caribbean surf while watching the lizards play hide and seek amidst the foliage below. The verandah has a large picnic table which can seat eight comfortably."
Kariwak Village Hotel

Kariwak Village Hotel (Tobago)

The Kariwak Village Hotel and holistic haven is one of my favorites places anywhere. It offers 24 air-conditioned, ground floor rooms (18 poolside, 6 garden) in a lush tropical garden setting near Tobago's finest beaches. The hotel emphasizes holistic activities -- Hatha Yoga, Qi Gong, and massages - and hosts workshops on mind and body health and alternative therapies during the year.
The Kariwak is festooned with native flowering plants that impart a verdant ambience of varied colors and fragrances. Lush tropical gardens provide home for varied and lively bird life. Here are all the amenities for a perfect Caribbean vacation - outdoor jacuzzi, swimming pool, waterfall, full service restaurant and bar, and close proximity to beaches.
I must say a word about the Kariwak restaurant. It is a wonderful place in which to experience the pace of Tobago. The friendly staff serves meals in a thatched-roof open-air dining room inspired by the buildings of the early inhabitants of the islands, the Arawaks. Wholesome, healthy food is prepared and served with love, care, and imagination under the guidance of co-manager Cynthia Clovis. Cynthia plans and supervises every dish, every day. Whole, fresh natural foods enhanced with herbs grown in the hotel's own gardens are the soul of Kariwak's cuisine, in which canned and frozen foods play no part. The Kariwak serves homemade breads, ice creams, yogurt, and teas and makes salads and snacks available between meals.

Pax Guest House Mount St. Benedict (Trinidad)

Email: stay@paxguesthouse.com  At the edge of the Northern Range, with the ornate tapestry of the blue-green forest on Mount Tabor at its back and the lush Plains of Caroni at its feet, lies the Pax Guest House Mount St. Benedict. Centrally located in the cool heights (250 m, 820 ft.) of the largest and oldest (1912) Benedictine monastery in the Caribbean, Pax boasts 19 rooms, three tennis courts, and several nature trails on a 243-ha (600-acre) estate. The area contains two distinctly different types of evergreen forest: softwood (Caribbean pine) and hardwood. Guided tours through the estate are available Pax Guest House is centrally located for birding excursions in all directions and is itself surrounded by bird-rich habitat. The manager, Gerard Ramsawak, is the epitome of a perfect host, providing delectable Caribbean dishes, sumptuous lunches, and sublime rum punch while adding his own charming personality to an already pleasing ambiance. You may telephone Pax directly from overseas, and you may telephone overseas from Pax. Piarco Airport is about 11 km (7 mi.) to the east, and Port-of-Spain is 12 km (7.5 mi.) to the west Electricity at Pax is standard 120-volt, 60-cycle alternating current; appliances usually will need no converters. Most rooms are on the second floor. Baths are mostly shared, with separate men's and ladies' rooms. There also are efficiency (self-contained) rooms. Breakfast usually is served from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., lunch buffet at 12:30 p.m., and dinner buffet at 7:30 p.m. Birders can arrange to have breakfast served as early as 5:30 a.m. or to have fruit and beverages set out for them the night before. Enormous lunches are packed every day for picnics in the field.
Speyside Inn

Speyside Inn (Tobago)

"The Speyside Inn is a small, affordable, owner-operated country Inn situated on the outskirts of a small fishing village on Tobago's North East coast. It is utterly unique, and uniquely enchanting.
"With six large rooms opening on a stunning expanse of sea, sky, and tiny islands so close you feel you can touch them, plus two attractive self-catering cabins and an open-terrace restaurant bordered by frangipani and sea-grape, the Speyside Inn offers an alluring mix of simplicity and sophistication. Service is friendly and personal; the ambience is casual; and the cuisine is exceptionally good.
"This is an ideal place to lie back in a hammock and leave the rest of the world behind. Alternatively it's a perfect base for diving, snorkeling, hiking, fishing, bird-watching, swimming, and touring the majestic rain forests of this magical island.
"Either way you can surrender to the warm massage of the Caribbean, the invigorating swell of the Atlantic, and the constant caress of the Northeast Tradewinds - and ask yourself what kept you away so long."

Birding and Natural History

Coral Reefs

Coral Reefs, by Environment TOBAGO

"Coral reefs are spectacular to behold, lush gardens in the sea, supporting a staggering diversity of marine life in a densely packed, thriving marine metropolis. In fact, coral reefs harbour the greatest diversity of life in the oceans, and are second only to tropical rainforests in the number of species found in one area on Earth. Nearly 25% of all marine life depends upon coral reefs for their survival, yet reefs make up only a very small part of the world's oceans: far less than 1% of the vast ocean floor. Because of this, coral reefs are often called the rainforests of the sea."

Conservation

Environment TOBAGO

Environment TOBAGO

"Environment TOBAGO conserves Tobago's natural and living resources and advances the knowledge and understanding of such resources, their wise and sustainable use, and their essential relationship to human health and the quality of life. Tobago is a tiny island (116 sq. miles) located at the southern tip of the Caribbean archipelago. It is the little sister of Trinidad, a rural and peaceful island (population: 50,000) which only now is seeing an increase in tourism development. Our environment is already under severe stress after years of abuse and neglect. If action is not taken now to reverse the current trends and prepare for the increase in development currently taking place, Tobago may become another Caribbean island stripped of its charm - its wildlife and forests, even the sand on its beaches."
Environmental Management Authority, Trinidad & Tobago

Environmental Management Authority, Trinidad & Tobago

"The Environmental Management Authority (EMA) is a statutory body established by the government of Trinidad & Tobago to address the country's environmental problems. The EMA was established in June 1995 under the Environmental Management Act, No. 3 of 1995. The Environmental Management Act is legislation with the goal of ensuring the protection, conservation, enhancement and wise use of the environment of Trinidad & Tobago. It also establishes the EMA, sets out its functions and provides for an Environmental Trust Fund and an Environmental Commission. To give effect to the many provisions of the Act, subsidiary legislation is required and this will be put in place by the EMA."

Keith Barrow's Birds of Trinidad & Tobago

Keith Barrow's Birds of Trinidad & Tobago

"Trinidad is the Southern most island of the Caribbean, located off the East coast of Venezuela, the two countries being separated by a channel which is not more than seven miles wide. As a result of its location, Trinidad & Tobago have a South American or neotropical fauna, as opposed to the other islands of the Caribbean whose bird life is predominately 'Tropical North American'. Its location also gives Trinidad the unique advantage of harbouring over 400 species of birds, making it one of the richest birding countries per square mile in the world. Dr. Russell Barrow, a renowned local photographer, has captured many of these species on film."

Do It Caribbean

Do It Caribbean

"The carnival land of Trinidad is the larger part of this twin-island nation, and its inhabitants move at a fast pace, especially in the capital, Port of Spain, whose 500,000 inhabitants live in the tightly-packed corridors of downtown. This is where the action is; the streets are a cacophony of bars and businesses, markets and maxi-taxis booming music. The home of limbo, calypso and the steel band, it has a hectic nightlife, and if you have to eat, the choice will overwhelm you; but there's no time to sit down, especially when it's Carnival time."

Historic Tobago Tour

"Tobago is a small island in the southern Caribbean, and it offers all that one might expect of a Caribbean tourist destination. Politically, it is part of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago, though the history of the two islands is distinct. These pages present a tour of historic sites on Tobago that are related to the production of sugar, rum and molasses. During the late 18th and early 19th century, the export of these three products to England and the United States created a thriving economy, the remains of which can still be seen on the island. It is these remains that we will visit..."
